Fast Pyrolysis

Fast pyrolysis is a process involving rapid thermochemical conversion of carbon-containing fuel/feed to the process; this process happens in the absence of oxygen and at temperatures around 500°C for biomass. Moderate reactor temperature and low pressure conditions are typically used for operation; start-up time is relatively much shorter than that of gasification. Products from this process are: biochar, pyrolysis oil, and non-condensable gases. Rapid cooling of pyrolysis vapors is usually required soon after biochar content has been effectively reduced. This type of pyrolysis system/process will usually include some type of feed preparation (which usually reduces particle size), particulate removal, and a pyrolysis oil collection system.
