Extractive Fermentation

This type of fermentation process utilizes an extraction process with the feed to the process; because many different feeds can be used (all or most of which will contain sugar that is going to be fermented), this process effectively removes the sugar components from the feed and ferments this sugar all within the same equipment. The extracted “pieces” of the feed are removed and the solution is usually sent to a second fermenter; this second solution is then sent to another separation process that will take the ethanol from the solution: distillation columns are effective methods of this separation method.
